There's a lot of buzz right now about lip stains--particularly the new one that Cover Girl just launched as part of their Outlast collection. I've tried it, and while I tend to prefer stains and tints over traditional lipsticks, as with all lip stains, it lacks that ever-necessary bit of moisture for over 40 lips (and lips trying to survive the NYC weather right now).

Two to try: Clarins Lip Colour Tint has been a favorite of mine since it launched. In 15 shades--plenty to take you through all seasons and from day into night--it lends a bit of sheer, moisturizing color. At $20 you might not feel like buying multiples, but if you're like me, you'll find yourself grabbing for them often.
The second is English Ideas Hint of Color SPF 18 Lip Balm. This only comes in one shade--but it's a universally flattering one that delivers a pouty-lip look without really trying. It's moisturizing and protective(plus SPF18), but the color it gives and the more upscale-looking tube make it more of a grown-up girl's answer to lip balm. You won't find it at Sephora any more (a sad day for me when that happened) but it's available at Amazon for $12--and well worth it.
